 “No electricity, no vote,” South Africans threaten to shun ruling party ANC Residents in Katlehong, a township outside Johannesburg, have resolved to boycott South Africa's upcoming local elections on November 4 due to long-standing failures by authorities to provide basic services like electricity. For over 20 years, around 180 households in the community have relied on illegal electrical connections pulled from neighboring areas to power their homes. Angry over the lack of formal grid infrastructure, residents are directing their frustration at the ruling African National Congress (ANC). "We have made a collective decision: no electricity, no vote," said community leader Lesiba Rankapole, 59. "We know it is illegal, but we had no choice because we cannot live without electricity. Emplaces operational plans to arrest other gang members


Police Operatives attached to the Awgbu Divisional Headquarters leveraging on community support on 12th June 2025 by 10.20am arrested one Chimaobi Mbonu ‘m’ aged 19 years old allegedly a member of a kidnapping gang involved in the kidnap and murder of late Mr George Onwurah in May 2024 at Ndiukwuenu Village, Orumba North Local Government Area. 


Preliminary information revealed that the said Chimaobi and some other gang members still at large kidnapped and tortured their victims to death after collecting ransom. The criminal gang is also responsible for the vandalization of the Community Health Care Centre, where they stole a lot of electrical materials and other valuables.


Given the above, the Operatives have emplaced operational plans to arrest other gang members that are currently at large.
