Peter Obi Confirms 2027 Presidential Bid, Pledges Single Term and Non-Violent Campaign

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has announced his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, committing to a single four-year term if elected. Speaking during a live session on X Spaces on Sunday night, Obi addressed supporters in Nigeria and the diaspora, outlining his vision for the country.

In a statement released Monday by his spokesman, Ibrahim Umar of the Peter Obi Media Reach, Obi dismissed speculations of a joint ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. However, he expressed openness to coalition talks focused on addressing Nigeria’s pressing issues, such as insecurity, economic revival, and poverty alleviation. “If the coalition is not about stopping the killings in Benue, Zamfara, how to revive our economy, how to make our industries productive, how to put food on the tables of Nigerians… Count me out,” Obi declared.

Obi promised to stabilize Nigeria within two years of taking office, emphasizing security, education, and poverty reduction as his top priorities for the first 100 days. He vowed to curb corruption, cut governance costs, and ensure his family remains uninvolved in corrupt practices. “My past speaks loudly for me. Wherever there was an issue in Anambra State, I was there physically,” he said, referencing his tenure as Anambra State governor.

Addressing internal Labour Party disputes, Obi revealed ongoing efforts to secure Independent National Electoral Commission recognition for the Nenadi Usman-led faction, in line with a Supreme Court ruling. He also endorsed the rotation of governance between Nigeria’s North and South, citing his implementation of the principle in Anambra.

Obi criticized President Bola Tinubu’s reported 10-day trip to St. Lucia, noting, “President Tinubu has never slept a night in any state of Nigeria outside Lagos since assuming office in 2023.” He contrasted this with Nigeria’s ongoing crises, stating, “People are dying in Benue, Borno, and other parts, and our leaders are commissioning bus stops and holidaying.”

For 2027, Obi pledged a non-violent campaign focused on transparency, ensuring “our votes will count” through vigilant monitoring before result announcements. He also vowed to strengthen opposition politics and prevent elected officials from defecting to other parties. “Nobody abroad takes you seriously if you don’t have a stable government,” he added, calling for responsible governance and integrity.

Obi urged Nigerians to join his mission to rescue the nation, emphasizing that leaders must prioritize citizens’ lives and be physically present to address crises.
