The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has rejected claims that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is influenced by a powerful cabal, asserting that Tinubu is firmly in control. Speaking at the 2025 OAU Distinguished Personality Lecture in Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Thursday, Wike praised the president’s bold leadership, stating, “He has shown that he has the courage. Under Tinubu, there is nothing like cabal. This is a president that is in charge.”
Delivering the keynote address, Wike, a lawyer and former Rivers State governor, lauded Tinubu’s decisive actions, including the removal of the petrol subsidy and the unification of foreign exchange rates—reforms he claimed previous presidents, such as Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, lacked the courage to implement. He argued that the subsidy removal ended widespread fraud, which had benefited a few at the nation’s expense.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s six decades since independence, Wike acknowledged the country’s underperformance and deepening fault lines but expressed optimism about its potential. He emphasized the need for robust governance frameworks, unity in diversity, and collective effort to rebuild trust and achieve national progress. “The desired Nigeria won’t fall from heaven but will require the vision, sacrifice, hard work, and purpose of all citizens,” Wike said, urging Nigerians to leave “resolves, not regrets” for future generations.
Addressing his critics calling for his removal as FCT minister, Wike dismissed their claims about his capacity to deliver, asserting his competence. He also reiterated his stance on ground rent debts in Abuja, insisting that defaulters must settle their outstanding payments, stating, “Heaven would not fall if they did so.”
The event, held at Obafemi Awolowo University, was attended by prominent figures, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi; Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; and former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and Samuel Ortom.
