39-year-old Chris Freeman and 27-year-old Katelyn Freeman were both arrested after their 7-year-old son was brought to the hospital weighing a mere and shocking 28 lbs.
Responding medical staff were shocked and sickened at the child's condition, saying he had suffered both mental and physical abuse. The responding doctor described the child as a "near fatality" due to his years of abuse and the fact that "he could not have endured any more".
Russellville Chief of Police described the child as "just a skeleton with skin". While searching the Freeman's home, they described it as unfit for children overall, although the child did have minor siblings living in the home also.
Investigators uncoverd a closet converted into a room in which to confine the 7-year-old and a 5-year-old sibling. They described finding human excrement on the floor and on the walls.
Other children in the home informed investigators that the "two children were tied up and placed in the closet as punishment".
The couple admitted to authorities they had confined the children to this room as punishment.
Both Chris and Katelyn Freeman are being charged with first-degree battery and endangering the welfare of a child.
