California grower’s 2,346-pound pumpkin takes world championship title

A California grower claimed the top prize at the 2025 Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-off in Half Moon Bay with a 2,346-pound pumpkin.

Brandon Dawson of Santa Rosa, who finished second last year with a 2,465-pound gourd, secured first place this year. Travis Gienger, last year’s winner with a 2,471-pound pumpkin, said his own entry for 2025 split earlier in the season, so he attended the event as a spectator to support friends.

Dawson received $21,114 for his win, calculated at $9 per pound. The competition also offers a $30,000 bonus for breaking the world record, a milestone Gienger achieved in 2023 with a 2,749-pound pumpkin.
