Nigerian Army Launches Probe into Death of Lieutenant Samson Haruna in Uyo Fire Incident

The Nigerian Army’s 2 Brigade Headquarters in Akwa Ibom State has initiated an investigation into the tragic death of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, who succumbed to injuries from a fire incident on September 22, 2025, at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH).

In a statement released on Friday, October 10, 2025, Captain Lawal Muhammad, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for 2 Brigade, confirmed that a probe was launched immediately after the incident to determine its circumstances. “The outcome of the investigation will be made public upon its conclusion,” Muhammad assured.

The statement detailed that Lieutenant Haruna and his wife were involved in a fire incident on September 22, resulting in severe burns to the officer. He was promptly evacuated to UUTH, where he received comprehensive medical treatment. Despite the medical team’s efforts, Haruna passed away on October 6, 2025.

The Nigerian Army expressed deep condolences to Haruna’s family, friends, and colleagues, praying for the repose of his soul. The statement also thanked the public for their support and reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to professionalism, discipline, and accountability.

The investigation, handled by a military board of inquiry, aims to establish the cause of the fire, assess any potential foul play, and ensure adherence to military ethics. The Army’s response comes amid growing public scrutiny of personnel-related incidents, with the military emphasizing transparency to address concerns over accountability within Nigeria’s security forces.
