Trump celebrates Diwali festival of lights at White House

President Donald Trump marked the Diwali festival of lights at the White House Oval Office on Tuesday, celebrating the victory of good over evil. The annual festival, observed by Hindus and others in India and around the world, symbolizes light overcoming darkness, with homes and public spaces illuminated to represent hope, renewal, and the triumph of virtue.

Trump extended his Diwali greetings earlier in the day, emphasizing the holiday’s significance. "Diwali is a timeless reminder of light's victory over darkness," he said in a prepared statement. He encouraged families and communities to come together, draw strength from hope, and celebrate a lasting spirit of renewal. "As millions light diyas and lanterns, we rejoice in the eternal truth that good will always triumph over evil. May this observance bring serenity, prosperity, hope, and peace," he added. The White House event welcomed members of the Indian-American community, senior officials, and diplomats, featuring the traditional lighting of a lamp, cultural performances, and a sampling of Indian sweets. This continues a tradition of presidential Diwali observances, including last year’s event that featured greetings from astronaut Sunita "Suni" Williams aboard the International Space Station.
