Ricky Gervais’ stand-up special, Mortality, will debut worldwide on Netflix on December 30. The special, filmed at London’s Palladium earlier this year, sees Gervais exploring his own mortality with his signature dark humor, reflecting on life, death, and the state of the world—a theme familiar from his Netflix series After Life. Netflix promises that the special will leave “no topic off limits.”
Mortality marks the conclusion of Gervais’ international 80-arena tour this December, which included performances at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Radio City Music Hall in New York, and a 14-night stint at the Palladium. The tour has set box office records across multiple European countries. “I think Mortality is my most honest and confessional show so far and also my favourite tour,” Gervais said. “I still can’t believe what a privilege it is to fly around the world making people laugh.”
Gervais, best known for creating the BBC series The Office, has become one of the world’s top arena comedians through his shows Mortality, Humanity, Supernature, and Armageddon, the latter earning him a Golden Globe. His 2022 show Supernature faced criticism for jokes about trans issues, which Gervais said were aimed at “trans activist ideology,” not trans individuals.
In recent years, Gervais has partnered closely with Netflix for his creative projects, while maintaining a reputation for roasting Hollywood stars as a Golden Globe host. In September, Netflix announced Alley Cats, an adult animated series featuring Gervais alongside British comedians Diane Morgan, Tom Basden, and Kerry Godliman.
