CHESS GRANDMASTER DANIEL NARODITSKY DIED FROM ABNORMAL HEARTBEAT AFTER ACCIDENTAL OVERDOSE. (PHOTO).

Chess grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky died from abnormal heartbeat after accidental overdose

Daniel Naroditsky, a prominent American chess grandmaster and popular online figure, died from an abnormal heart rhythm triggered by an accidental overdose, according to a toxicology report released by North Carolina authorities. Naroditsky was found dead at his home in October at age 29. The report said multiple substances were present in his system, including methamphetamine and kratom, a psychoactive substance derived from a tropical plant that is sometimes marketed in supplements, gummies, and energy products. Investigators said the combination of drugs led to a fatal cardiac event.

Naroditsky was last confirmed alive on Oct. 18, when he accepted a food delivery. He was discovered the following day after missing a scheduled flight. In the days leading up to his death, friends became concerned after noticing erratic behavior during online activity and visited his home, where they removed dozens of Adderall pills. Authorities later found bags of kratom inside the residence as part of their investigation.

A chess prodigy, Naroditsky earned the grandmaster title at just 18 years old, reaching the highest rank in the game short of world champion. He became widely known beyond traditional chess circles for livestreaming matches and offering real-time commentary, helping bring speed chess and high-level analysis to a new generation of fans. His broadcasts regularly attracted large audiences on platforms such as YouTube and Twitch, especially during the surge in online chess popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

That same era also saw increased controversy, as elite online play became plagued by accusations of cheating tied to the use of advanced computer assistance. Naroditsky was publicly accused by former world champion Vladimir Kramnik, allegations he firmly denied and which were never proven. In his final livestream, Naroditsky acknowledged the emotional toll the accusations had taken, saying that strong performances now led some viewers to assume bad intentions rather than skill.

After Naroditsky’s death, tensions escalated further. The international chess governing body later filed a formal complaint against Kramnik, accusing him of harassment and conduct damaging to other players. Kramnik responded by filing a defamation lawsuit. In a public statement, he described Naroditsky’s death as an immense tragedy and said he had urged those close to the young grandmaster to seek help for him shortly before his death, adding that subsequent threats against his own family forced him to take legal action.
