  South Africa's Unemployment Rate Rises to 33.6% in Q2 2026 South Africa's unemployment rate climbed to 33.6% in the second quarter of 2026, up from 32.7% in the first quarter, according to new figures from the national statistics department. The number of unemployed people rose to 8.5 million, while the number of employed people fell by 16,000 to 16.7 million. The data shows job losses across key sectors including community and social services, mining, agriculture, manufacturing and utilities. The steepest declines were recorded in the Western Cape, Gauteng, and North West provinces. Officials did not provide clear reasons for the downturn, leaving the main drivers of the rising unemployment rate uncertain.

 BENUE POLICE REPELS ARMED ATTACK AT AWANSE, RESCUES ABDUCTED WOMAN 


The Benue State Police Command has repelled an attack by suspected armed herdsmen at Awanse community in Kwande Local Government Area and rescued an abducted woman.


Police Public Relations Officer of the Command DSP EDET UDEME stated that the suspected armed herdsmen invaded Awanse Community firing sporadically, but police teams swiftly engaged the assailants and forced them to flee the area.


The abducted woman was rescued unhurt and no life was lost during the incident at Awanse as peace has been restored in the area.

Meanwhile, the Command has provided an update on the incident at Abende community, which occurred few days ago . 


The statement says during sustained search and combing operations in the area, five (5) additional dead bodies were recovered, bringing the total number of fatalities in Abende community to ten (10).


The general security situation in the affected areas is presently calm, as intensive patrols, surveillance, and monitoring continue.


The Commissioner of Police, Benue State Police Command, Ifeanyi Emenari,  assures the good people of the state of the Command’s unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property and reiterates that all necessary operational measures are being sustained to prevent further attacks and bring perpetrators to justice.
