A scene unfolded in Milwaukee early on Feb. 24, when police responded to a call that would end in heartbreak.
Hayward Jenkins, 38, is facing first-degree intentional homicide charges in connection with the death of his 66-year-old mother, Cheryl Jenkins, according to a criminal complaint obtained by PEOPLE.
Authorities allege that Cheryl was struck with a wooden baseball bat inside her own home.
Officers arrived at the 1700 block of South 44th Street just after 8 a.m. after Cheryl’s fiancé reported that Jenkins had hit her on the head with the bat and left the residence.
Emergency responders found Cheryl lying face down in a guest room, the bat reportedly resting on her. CPR was attempted, but she was pronounced @! at the scene.
The bedroom, according to the complaint, appeared “cluttered and had a broken metal bed frame,” a stark contrast to how Cheryl’s fiancé said it looked the day before. Blood was visible on the bat, the door, and a corner of the wall.
Authorities later confirmed through the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office that Cheryl died from blunt force injuries.
The complaint details that Jenkins had arrived at the home the night before, between 9 and 10 p.m. on Feb. 23.
Cheryl reportedly fed him and allowed him to sleep in the guest room.
Her fiancé said he woke briefly around 4 a.m., hearing noises he assumed were coming from upstairs neighbors, and returned to bed, unaware that Cheryl was in danger.
Around 7:30 a.m., he found Cheryl on the guest room floor and immediately called 911. Jenkins had left the home but was later apprehended at a casino just after 12:30 p.m.
During a Mirandized statement to police, Jenkins allegedly described an argument with his mother over money and silver coins, saying that he felt ignored and that the conflict escalated.
“He stated that his mom blew off his concerns and kept coming in his face,” the complaint notes, adding that Jenkins claimed Cheryl “had scissors up to him and was looking at him like she was going to do something.”
He allegedly told authorities, “I felt we were getting nowhere and I had exhausted every situation I could… I got angry with the situation and flipped out.”
