Al Qaeda-linked insurgents establish check points around capital, call on Malians to rise up Al Qaeda-linked insurgents have called on Malians to ‌rise up against the military-led government and transition to Sharia law, as multiple security sources said the group had set up checkpoints around the capital and seized a northern town. The latest incidents come just days after Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) launched unprecedented assaultsacross the country on April 25 in coordination with the Tuareg-dominated rebel group the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).  North Korean leader Kim rides tank with daughter during military training

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his teenage daughter rode a tank together during army exercises, state media reported Friday, marking their latest joint public appearance following rocket launches and pistol firing.

According to the Korean Central News Agency, Kim oversaw firing drills and other exercises with tank units and infantry troops on Thursday, urging the completion of war preparations. Photos showed Kim and his daughter, both in black leather jackets, on an olive-green tank alongside other soldiers. The girl, reportedly 13-year-old Kim Ju Ae, was seen peeking out of the tank’s hatch while Kim sat atop the vehicle, smiling.

Kim Ju Ae has appeared at high-profile military and state events since late 2022, fueling speculation that she may be groomed as her father’s successor. State media has described her as Kim’s “most beloved” child, publishing images highlighting their close relationship. Recent appearances include firing pistols at a munitions factory and observing live-fire rocket tests. Last September, she traveled to Beijing with her father, and during New Year’s celebrations, she was shown kissing him on the cheek.

South Korea’s intelligence agency recently assessed that Kim is close to naming her as his heir, though some analysts question this due to his own relatively young age and the male-dominated power structure in North Korea. The exercises coincided with U.S. and South Korea military drills, which North Korea views as a rehearsal for invasion. The U.S. and South Korea concluded an 11-day command post exercise Thursday, though field training continues.
