Oshiomhole Declares 'Political Sins' Cannot Send Politicians to Hellfire at Edo APC Congress

Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North in the National Assembly, has declared that "political sins" do not lead politicians to hellfire, describing such transgressions as temporary and forgivable aspects of the political game.

The former Edo State Governor and ex-National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) made the remarks on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, during the Edo State APC congress held in Benin City. The event saw the affirmation and re-election of Emperor Jarret Tenebe as the state party chairman for a second term, along with other members of the State Working Committee, in a peaceful, consensus-driven process.

Oshiomhole was responding to Tenebe's acceptance speech, in which the newly re-elected chairman humbly sought forgiveness from anyone he may have offended during his tenure as acting chairman. Tenebe reflected on his time in leadership, particularly during turbulent periods, including internal party challenges and the build-up to key elections.

“In the course of discharging my responsibility, I may have stepped on toes where my actions may have offended anyone while carrying out my duties in strengthening the democratic foundation of our party,” Tenebe said. “I sincerely offer my apologies. Every decision taken was made in good faith and in the overall interest of the APC.”

He emphasized that actions were guided by the collective goal of party success and progress, extending a hand of reconciliation to all aggrieved members as the party unites for future challenges.

Addressing the gathering, Oshiomhole downplayed the gravity of such political missteps. “Political sin cannot lead anybody to hellfire,” he stated. He argued that politicians are inherently bound to err, but these errors do not warrant eternal damnation.

“Jarret said all the sins he has committed should be forgiven. And I said he who does not sin does not belong to this planet Earth. This Earth is populated by sinners,” Oshiomhole remarked. “For sinners who weep, ask for forgiveness in the way he has done. But to be honest, political sinners don’t need to go to hell. Political sins can only grow around a moment and then they just get dissolved. So, Jarret, you are brand new, stainless like a mint.”

The senator's comments recall earlier controversies during his time as APC National Chairman, when he was alleged to have said that joining the APC forgives a politician's sins, a claim he has consistently denied.
