 MAN SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS FOR MURDER IN JOSEFA VILLAGE A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to 16 years’ direct imprisonment for the murder of 40-year-old Jabulani Kabide in Josefa Village, Saselamani. Siphiwe Hlungwani was sentenced by the Thohoyandou High Court on Monday, 24 August 2026, after being convicted of murder. The court heard that Hlungwani allegedly stole a cellphone from a relative of Kabide’s family. When the cellphone owner reported the theft to Hlungwani’s mother, he allegedly became aggressive and threatened her. Kabide, who was the cellphone owner’s cousin, confronted Hlungwani, leading to an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation. Hlungwani’s mother later allegedly warned the cellphone owner to hide, saying her son had left the house armed with a knife and intended to kill her.  Court bars police, FRSC from imposing fines over third-party insurance


A federal high court in Abuja has ruled that the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) cannot impose fines on motorists over third-party motor insurance without a court order.


Hauwa Yilwa, presiding judge, delivered the judgment in a suit filed by Deji Adeyanju, the activist and lawyer, against the inspector-general of police (IGP), the attorney-general of the federation (AGF), and the FRSC.


The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/291/2025, sought clarification of the powers of law enforcement agencies to enforce compliance with motor vehicle insurance laws.
