Al-Mustapha Dismisses Ex-DSS Operative’s Claims on Abacha’s Death Former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, Maj. Hamza Al-Mustapha (retd.), has dismissed claims made by former Department of State Services operative, Dennis Amachree, regarding the circumstances surrounding the late military ruler’s death. Al-Mustapha described the account as false and urged Nigerians to disregard it. He spoke with journalists on the sidelines of the 3rd General Hassan Usman Katsina Memorial Conference held at Arewa House in Kaduna on Saturday. His reaction followed renewed public attention on Amachree’s memoir, The Shadow Warrior, in which the retired DSS officer reportedly detailed his account of the events leading to Abacha’s death on June 8, 1998. SECRETARY OF UMULOGBO IN IMO STATE NARRATES HOW TWO SUSPECTS, ONYEMA OKONKWO AND EMMANUEL, WERE APPREHENDED OVER DEATH OF LATE CHINWENDU ACHUMBA.(PHOTO).

Secretary of Umulogbo in Imo State narrates how two suspects, Onyema Okonkwo and Emmanuel, were apprehended over death of late Chinwendu Achumba.

According to him, the father of the deceased became worried after calling his daughter repeatedly for hours without getting any response. He then contacted the caretaker, who was away from the lodge at the time. He explained that the apartment was mostly occupied by nursing students, but none of them were around when the incident occurred, leading to suspicions that the suspects may have been monitoring the victim.

He stated that on Thursday, May 21, 2026, news of the incident broke out and they quickly went to the lodge where her body was discovered before it was later taken to the mortuary. Hours later, the person who reportedly went to report the case was said to be the stepbrother of one of the suspects, who security operatives initially held for questioning before releasing him the same day.

He added that while the police began investigations, youths in Umulogbo also launched their own inquiries. During the process, they recalled an earlier incident years ago where one of the suspects, identified as a vulcanizer Onyema Okonkwo, had allegedly been linked to an attempted assault involving a minor and was reportedly caught at the time. That recollection raised suspicions within the community.

The following morning, the community reportedly held an assembly for residents, alongside prayers and a protest by women, but the suspect allegedly failed to attend the meetings. Community members later visited his house to question him. He initially denied knowing anything about the incident, but they said they noticed scratch marks on his face. When asked, he reportedly claimed he was sick, but people close to him said they knew nothing about such illness.

According to the narration, after further questioning and being told he had been seen around the area, he first denied being there but later admitted he had gone there on an errand. After continued questioning, he reportedly admitted seeing the victim. While on their way to police station, they told him that he should said the truth here so that they will look for a way to cover the situation up, he then agreed he raped her twice.

He was later taken to the police station where, according to the account, he admitted involvement and stated that another person was also involved.
