Some traditional rulers from various communities in Ibeku Egwu Asaa, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, have performed a counter-libation to nullify and reverse an earlier ritual allegedly directed against Governor Alex Otti by a former state Commissioner, Charles Ogbonnaya.
In a video that went viral on social media, Ogbonnaya, a former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, was seen pouring water on the ground and raising a kola nut while invoking the ancestors. He accused Governor Otti of denying the ancestors their rights by allegedly operating the affairs of the state from his private residence in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA, rather than the Government House in Umuahia.
Reacting swiftly to the development, traditional rulers and community leaders from different clans within Ibeku land conducted a separate libation ceremony aimed at reversing the former commissioner’s prayers.
Describing Ogbonnaya as their “prestigious” and “distinguished son,” the monarchs made it clear that his action did not receive their blessing or approval.
The traditional rulers stressed that no individual has the right to perform such traditional rites without the consent and knowledge of the recognized custodians of the land.
“We are not dissatisfied with our son, but the action he took was not good and was never approved by us, the traditional rulers,” the Ezes stated.
They further declared: “All evil wine and words against Governor Alex Otti are reversed. It shall be well with Governor Alex Otti.”
The monarchs expressed satisfaction with Governor Otti’s performance in office so far and warned against using the name of Ibeku land for political purposes.
