 Flights suspended to Ethiopian holy town of Lalibela as fighting expands Flights to the historic Ethiopian town of Lalibela ​were suspended on Thursday due to fighting nearby, seven sources said, as residents in the Tigray region to the north stocked up on food and ‌cash, fearing that renewed fighting could trigger another major war. Tigrayan forces seized three local airports and launched attacks in Afar and Amhara regions with allies there this week, in the most serious escalation since a devastating 2020-22 war against Ethiopian government troops. In its first public comments on the fighting, Ethiopia's army said on Thursday that it had foiled the attacks and killed, wounded or captured more than 500 enemy fighters. The United Nations ​and the European Union called for restraint and a return to the African Union-brokered peace process that had ended a conflict that killed hundreds of thousands of people.  Works Ministry, Police Forge Alliance on Highway Protection


The Federal Ministry of Works and the Nigeria Police Force have reinforced collaboration on the protection of federal road infrastructure nationwide, as the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji  Disu, paid a strategic courtesy visit to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, in Abuja 


The engagement, focused on improving security architecture around major highway construction corridors, including the Federal Government’s flagship legacy projects under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu


 Minister of Works, David Umahi, commended the police and other security agencies for their continued support in safeguarding critical national assets  despite prevailing security challenges in some parts of the country,

 

He described the administration’s flagship highway projects as long-term investment corridors designed to stimulate economic growth, enhance logistics, and strengthen national integration


The Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, described the visit as timely and strategic, noting that road infrastructure remains central to the administration’s economic transformation agenda.


The Inspector-General of Police , Olatunji Disu said the visit is to strengthen possible areas of collaboration, and to improve safety on the nation highways.
