Natalie Imbruglia has spoken candidly about her journey to motherhood, describing the IVF process as one of the toughest experiences she has faced.
The singer, who welcomed her son Max in 2019 with the help of IVF and a sperm donor, reflected on that chapter of her life during an appearance on the How To Fail podcast with Elizabeth Day.
Looking back, Natalie said many women enter the process without fully understanding what lies ahead.
"It's pretty brutal," she admitted, urging anyone considering IVF to educate themselves thoroughly and ask as many questions as possible.
"There’s a lot I didn’t know or understand about the process," she explained. "There’s also a lot of trauma involved in learning things that someone could have told me beforehand."
One of the most emotional parts for Natalie was the waiting period after embryo implantation. She recalled finally receiving the news that she was pregnant, but even in that joyful moment, her thoughts were with other women still hoping for the same outcome.
"When I found out I was pregnant, the one thing in my mind was every woman on the planet who was still waiting," she said. "Just thinking about it now makes me emotional."
Natalie also opened up about the physical and emotional impact of the hormone treatments involved in IVF. According to her, the aftermath can be especially difficult.
"The in-between part is the hardest," she said. "It feels like freefall. They don't really prepare you for that. If it doesn't work, it's just, 'Sorry, it didn't work,' and then everything stops. You have to somehow pull yourself back together."
She added that many women are not mentally prepared for that stage of the journey.
Offering advice to others, Natalie encouraged women to seek support from people who have experienced IVF firsthand.
"Make sure you're really well informed and talk to women who have been through it," she said. "There is a lot that doctors won't tell you. And don't go through it alone. Have good friends you can call because it can feel very lonely."
The singer also addressed assumptions she encountered after becoming a mother, saying some people wrongly framed her decision to pursue IVF as choosing it instead of having a relationship with a man.
