Danny Glover Reveals Alzheimer's Diagnosis for the First Time

Danny Glover has disclosed for the first time that he is living with Alzheimer's disease, saying he was diagnosed in 2023 after his family noticed changes in his memory.

Speaking in an interview with PEOPLE ahead of his 80th birthday on July 22, the actor said he is still coming to terms with the diagnosis but does not view it as the end of his life.

"I'm still not accepting in my mind all parts of it," Glover said. "There are the moments that you keep remembering that validate the fact that you can remember stuff. And there are moments I'll never forget."

His daughter, Mandisa Glover, said the family first observed changes in 2022. She recalled that her father had long been known for remembering detailed events from decades earlier, but she began noticing gaps in stories he had told many times before.

According to Mandisa, the family later learned he had Alzheimer's disease. She said Glover, together with his relatives, including his younger brother Marty, has since adjusted to the diagnosis and decided to speak publicly about it.

Glover said sharing his experience is partly about recognising that many other people are living with the condition.

"I don't feel like it's the end of my life," he said. "There's work to do."

Born and raised in San Francisco, Glover began his career in community development before pursuing acting at the Black Actors' Workshop of the American Conservatory Theater. His early film roles included Places in the Heart (1984) and The Color Purple (1985).

He later gained international recognition for starring alongside Mel Gibson in the Lethal Weapon film series. His film credits also include Angels in the Outfield, Beloved and The Last Black Man in San Francisco.

Beyond acting, Glover has been active in humanitarian and social causes throughout his career. In 2022, he received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in recognition of his charitable and advocacy work.
