 NHRC RAISES CONCERN OVER INCITING STATEMENTS AHEAD OF ELECTIONS; URGES CITIZENS TO PROMOTE PEACE / DEMOCRACY The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has raised concern over cases of hate speech, inflammatory statements, threats of violence and voter intimidation ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in Osun state as well as the 2027 General Election. At a press briefing in Abuja, Executive secretary of the Commission Tony Ojukwu stressed the need for urgent action by relevant authorities to address statements capable of heightening tension and undermining peaceful participation in the electoral process. EFCC Arraigns Lady Over  Alleged N42million Fraud in Lagos 


The Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, arraigned one Chinwendu Fidelia Ohanebo before Justice M.A. Lawal of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, over an alleged N42,345,000 fraud. 


Ohanebo was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on obtaining under false pretences and stealing by conversion to the tune of N42,345,000 (Forty-Two Million, Three Hundred and Forty-Five Thousand Naira).


The first count reads: “That you CHINWENDU FIDELIA OHANEBO sometime in 2025, in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with the intent to defraud, obtained the sum of Forty Two Million Three Hundred and Forty Five Thousand Naira (N42,345,000.00) from one Musa Muhammed Jidda, under the false pretense for the supply of 45 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) at the rate of N941 per liter and committed an offence of obtaining under false pretences contrary to Sections 1(1)(a) and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.”


The second count reads: “That you CHINWENDU FIDELIA OHANEBO sometime in 2025, in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, dishonestly converted the total Forty Two Million Three Hundred And Forty Five Thousand Naira (N42,345,000.00) property of one Musa Muhammed Jidda to your own personal use and committed an offence of stealing by conversion contrary to Section 280(1) (b) and punishable under section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.”


The defendant pleaded “guilty” to count one and “not guilty” to count two when the charges were read to her. 


In view of her plea, prosecution counsel, H.U. Kofarnaisa, asked the court for an adjournment to commence trial on count two of the charge.


Justice M.A. Lawal adjourned the matter for review of facts on count one and commencement of trial on count two.


Subsequently, the judge ordered that the defendant be remanded in a Correctional facility pending the continuation of proceedings.
