Funke Akindele Sparks Backlash Over Birthday Photos Amid Nollywood Mourning for Ogogo

Nollywood superstar Funke Akindele has found herself at the center of social media criticism following her decision to share glamorous birthday photos on Monday, August 24. The actress, who celebrated her 49th birthday, posted celebratory images and expressed heartfelt gratitude to God just as the Nigerian film industry was reeling from the tragic news of veteran actor Taiwo Hassan’s passing.

Taiwo Hassan, widely known as Ogogo, was a beloved figure in Yoruba cinema, and his death has cast a somber shadow over Nollywood. While Akindele had previously shared a message of condolence, many fans felt her subsequent festive posts were poorly timed, sparking a heated debate about empathy and social media etiquette during times of grief.

Social Media Users React to the Timing

The contrast between the industry’s mourning and Akindele’s glamorous photo shoot did not sit well with several internet users. Many urged the box-office queen to “read the room” and exercise restraint out of respect for the late veteran.

Critics quickly flooded her comment section with disapproval. One user, Ayofe, questioned the necessity of the posts, asking, “Shey you no dey read the room no? Na birthday be the next thing to dey post?” Another commenter, Olayinka Mujeeb Aden, was more direct, calling the actress’s actions unfair given the gravity of Ogogo’s death.

Even well-wishers expressed reservations. A follower named Kanel commented that while they wished the actress a happy birthday and long life, they felt she should have skipped the public celebration for the day to keep the focus on Ogogo’s memory.

Supporters Defend the Actress

Despite the backlash, a significant portion of Akindele’s fanbase came to her defense. Supporters argued that a person’s birthday is a significant milestone that deserves recognition, regardless of external circumstances. They pointed out that mourning the dead and celebrating life are not mutually exclusive actions, especially since Akindele had already paid her respects to the late actor.

The ongoing debate highlights the delicate balance public figures must maintain when navigating personal milestones during collective periods of grief in the entertainment industry.
