APC PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN COUNCIL PRESS STATEMENT ATIKU MUST EXPLAIN THE LEGAL AND FISCAL BASIS OF HIS PETROL SUBSIDY PROPOSAL At his press conference in Abuja on Friday, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar reiterated his proposed  “production subsidy” for locally refined petrol, which he said would reduce pump prices. He went further to ask President Bola Tinubu to slash the cost of diesel and petrol at the pump. That proposal raises important legal, fiscal and practical questions that he must answer. Section 205(1) of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 provides that unrestricted free-market conditions shall determine wholesale and retail prices of petroleum products. The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, in a statement on Saturday, explained that it neither fixes pump prices nor issues administrative price templates, except where the statutory conditions for intervention are met.  LASG PARTNERS BLACK MARKET TEAM ON 50,000-CAPACITY MOVIE PREMIERE, TARGETS GUINNESS WORLD RECORD

The Lagos State Government has expressed its readiness to support the team behind the forthcoming premiere of Black Market, scheduled to hold at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos Island, on Saturday, 26 September 2026.

The film’s team, led by the Producer, Nora Awolowo; Co-Producer/Executive Producer, Omowunmi Dada; and Event Producer, Damilola Osikoya, paid a courtesy visit on Thursday, 27 August 2026, to the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, to seek the Ministry’s partnership and support for the premiere.

The meeting focused on plans for the event, which the organisers said is expected to attract an audience of about 50,000 people, with the ambition of setting a Guinness World Records record for the largest audience at a movie screening.

Speaking during the engagement, the Commissioner assured the team of the Ministry’s support, noting that the initiative aligns with the Lagos State Government’s commitment to nurturing young talents, creating opportunities for creatives and strengthening the State’s entertainment and creative economy.

“Lagos remains Nigeria’s leading hub for entertainment and creativity. We are committed to supporting initiatives that showcase our people’s talents, attract visitors and further strengthen the State’s position as a preferred destination for tourism, arts, culture and entertainment,” Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka stated.

She added that supporting young creatives is consistent with the THEMES Plus Development Agenda of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, particularly its focus on innovation, youth empowerment and the development of the creative economy.

Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka urged the Black Market team to maintain high standards and ensure that the premiere is professionally delivered in line with global best practices. She also advised the organisers to engage the relevant State Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to secure the necessary support and approvals for the successful hosting of the event.

The Commissioner noted that events of this scale have the potential to further position Lagos as a leading destination for major entertainment activities, while creating opportunities for local creatives and contributing to the State’s tourism economy.

Also present at the meeting was the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila, who reaffirmed the Ministry’s readiness to support initiatives that contribute to the growth, development and promotion of Lagos’ creative and entertainment sector.

The Black Market premiere is expected to bring together filmmakers, actors, entertainment stakeholders, young creatives and members of the public for what the organisers describe as an ambitious celebration of Nigerian cinema in Lagos.
