Randy Quaid, who starred in the original Days of Thunder alongside Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, has voiced strong disapproval of Anne Hathaway’s casting in the upcoming sequel.
Taking to social media on August 30, the 75‑year‑old actor argued that Hathaway was a “horrible choice” for the NASCAR‑themed film’s audience, claiming Kidman should reprise her role as Cruise’s love interest.
Quaid even pointed to Hathaway’s pregnancy, saying it made her unsuitable for the part, while urging Cruise not to “be a p****” and to bring back Kidman instead.
Quaid’s posts also criticized the production timeline, noting that the sequel, slated for release in June 2028, has a much longer lead time than the rushed schedule of the 1990 original. He suggested the delay could hurt the film’s success, contrasting it with the intense editing process of the first movie.
His comments sparked mixed reactions online, with some fans defending Hathaway’s appeal and others agreeing she was miscast.
Meanwhile, Cruise and Hathaway appeared together in a promotional video confirming the sequel. Dressed in a cowboy hat and motorcycle jacket, Hathaway introduced herself before the pair revealed a neon car emblazoned with “Days of Thunder: Summer 2028.”
Hathaway joked, “I’m going to have this baby and then we’re going to make this movie,” to which Cruise responded with enthusiasm.
Despite Quaid’s objections, the project is moving forward with Cruise producing and starring, Jerry Bruckheimer returning as producer, and Jonathan Levine directing.
