John Ternus takes over as Apple CEO, ending Tim Cook’s 15-year tenure

John Ternus took over as Apple’s new CEO on Tuesday, ending Tim Cook’s 15-year tenure at the helm of the technology giant. Under Cook, Apple’s market value soared to about $4.6 trillion, fueled largely by the continued success of the iPhone.

Ternus assumes leadership at a critical moment for Apple as artificial intelligence reshapes the technology industry. The shift represents one of the biggest changes in the sector since Steve Jobs introduced the first iPhone in 2007.

Apple has struggled to keep pace with some competitors in AI after delays and setbacks involving new features that the company had previously promised. Earlier this year, Apple unveiled additional AI capabilities, including upgrades to its Siri voice assistant, while emphasizing privacy and practical everyday uses.

The new CEO will face challenges extending beyond his background in hardware engineering. Ternus will be responsible for strengthening Apple’s position in the AI race while also managing supply chain issues and relationships with influential political figures, including President Donald Trump.

Cook developed a close working relationship with Trump while dealing with trade policies and tariffs affecting countries in Asia, where Apple relies heavily on manufacturing and supply chains. Although Cook is stepping down as CEO, he is expected to remain involved as executive chairman and help maintain Apple’s relationship with the Trump administration.

Ternus has played a role in developing several major Apple products during Cook’s tenure, including the Apple Watch, AirPods, and Apple Vision Pro. He will take center stage next week at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, for the launch of the company’s latest iPhone.
