MPPUD Begins Planting of 1,000 Economic, Ornamental Trees in Awka

By Alufo Bonaventure

The Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development (MPPUD), through its Department of Open Spaces and Recreation, has commenced the planting of 1,000 economic and ornamental trees at strategic locations across Awka metropolis.

The initiative, tagged “More Greener Campaign,” is aimed at enhancing public spaces, promoting environmental sustainability and contributing to a healthier and more attractive urban environment.

The programme is being implemented under the leadership of Mr Chijioke Ojukwu, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development.

The planting exercise covers locations including Ikenga Shopping Mall, Emeka Anyaoku Boulevard, Jerome Udorji Secretariat Complex, Federal Secretariat Complex, Solution Fun City, Amawbia, Kwata and Aroma flyovers.

The varieties include mango, orange, soursop, palm, king palm and masquerade trees, combining economic value with environmental and aesthetic benefits.

The choice of locations is significant, as most are busy public spaces used daily by residents, traders, commuters and visitors.

When fully grown, the trees are expected to provide shade, help reduce urban heat, improve air quality and enhance the appearance of major roads, public institutions and commercial areas.

The economic trees could also provide fruits and other benefits to residents, while the ornamental varieties would contribute to the beautification of the urban landscape.

Speaking on the initiative, Ojukwu reaffirmed the commitment of the state government to promoting a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment in Anambra.

He stressed that environmental sustainability should be regarded as an essential component of urban development and not a luxury.

The campaign also underscores the importance of long-term planning in environmental management. Although trees take time to mature, their benefits can extend across generations when properly nurtured and protected.

Beyond providing shade and improving air quality, trees can help moderate urban temperatures, reduce erosion and strengthen resilience to the effects of climate change.

However, the success of the programme will depend largely on the survival and maintenance of the trees after planting. Residents, traders, motorists and other users of the affected areas therefore have a role to play in protecting and nurturing the seedlings.

The campaign offers an opportunity for government and residents to work together in creating greener public spaces and improving the quality of life in Awka.

As the trees grow, their value will be reflected not only in the beauty they add to the city but also in the environmental and economic benefits they provide to present and future generations.
