Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was ordered to leave grand Royal Lodge when he was stripped of his titles by his brother King Charles in October 2025.
The former Prince Andrew has now handed back the keys to Royal Lodge in Windsor. The Crown Estate confirmed to PEOPLE on Oct. 9 that Andrew has formally surrendered the lease and the property is back in their hands.
Andrew, 66, moved out earlier this year after King Charles, 77, ordered him to leave.
The Crown Estate said repairs for dilapidation have been paid, with the figure set by independent assessors. PEOPLE understands King Charles covered the $2.4 million cost from his private income as a loan to ensure the Crown Estate, which generates money for the nation, was reimbursed.
It is not known how Andrew plans to repay. Around $400k compensation for surrendering early was deducted from the repair bill, since Andrew took the lease in 2003 and paid about $10 million in renovations plus rent upfront, with rights until 2078. That makes the total paid by the King $2 million.
Andrew lived at Royal Lodge with ex-wife Sarah Ferguson and daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie from 2013 until early this year.
The Crown Estate said focus is now on its future use and generating value after its early return. Andrew now lives at a house on Charles' Sandringham estate, over 100 miles away. Charles made the move amid renewed scrutiny of Andrew's ties to late Jeffrey Epstein.
On Oct. 8, Andrew won a legal challenge as search warrants used to raid his homes, including Royal Lodge, over misconduct in public office tied to his trade envoy role were ruled unlawful. He has not been charged and denies wrongdoing.
