The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has omitted former Senator Danjuma Laah from its recently released list of governorship candidates for Kaduna State, amid an ongoing dispute over the National Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship ticket.
Laah had earlier been announced as the party’s preferred candidate by the NDC State Executive Committee and local government chairmen. However, conflicting claims from the party’s state and national leadership have raised questions about the status of his nomination.
The controversy deepened after the party’s national leadership reportedly disowned a widely circulated document said to confirm Laah’s candidacy.
The NDC Deputy National Chairman (North), Alhaji Sidi Abdul Bomi, subsequently stated that the party had not formally issued a governorship ticket to any aspirant, contradicting the position earlier announced by the state chapter.
The dispute further intensified when Mohammed Sani Abbas also laid claim to the ticket, insisting that he was the party’s legitimate governorship candidate.
Meanwhile, some party stakeholders alleged that the name of the Kaduna State Chairman, Mordecai Sunday Ibrahim, had been submitted to INEC as a placeholder pending the resolution of the nomination dispute.
The competing claims have left uncertainty over who was formally endorsed by the party’s national leadership and whose name was submitted to the electoral commission.
Laah’s omission from INEC’s list has renewed calls for clarification from the party regarding the nomination process and the identity of the candidate officially presented to the electoral body.
However, the precise reason for Laah’s omission has not been officially disclosed.
Until the NDC and INEC clarify the circumstances surrounding the nomination, the dispute could create further uncertainty for the party as it prepares for the 2027 Kaduna State governorship election.
