Thailand: Nigeria, AfDB Agree to a Joint Review of Bank Portfolio

Nigeria and the African Development Bank have agreed to a joint technical review of the Bank's portfolio in the country.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, reached the agreement with AfDB President Dr Sidi Ould Tah at the ongoing IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok.

The review will identify bottlenecks, speed up project delivery and align ongoing operations with the Federal Government's priorities. Both sides will also prepare an official visit to Nigeria by the AfDB President, which is expected to include talks with President Bola Tinubu.

Oyedele says Nigeria will remain the Bank's largest shareholder and will meet its capital subscription obligations,  pledging support to the Bank's Four Cardinal Points agenda.

On the high cost of borrowing, the Minister says credit ratings do not always reflect reform progress, which pushes up financing costs for countries like Nigeria. In response,  Dr Ould Tah discloses that the AfDB is developing a facility to help African governments engage rating agencies and present credible economic data.
