October 12, 2026 – The Zambia Police Service wishes to inform the public that a three-months-old female infant, who was allegedly stolen from her mother in City Market area of Lusaka, has been found.
Brief facts of the matter are that on October 9, 2026, at around 14:00 hours, Beatrice Lengalenga, a resident of Katondo area in Kabwe District and mother of the infant, was allegedly lured to travel to Lusaka by an unidentified female who purported to offer her employment.
Upon arrival in City Market area of Lusaka, the mother, accompanied by the infant and the unidentified female, proceeded to a salon, where the mother was offered hairdressing services.
While the mother was having her hair done, the female offered to hold and look after the infant. She subsequently allegedly fled with the child without the mother's consent.
Upon receiving the report, police officers immediately launched investigations and employed intelligence-gathering techniques to establish the whereabouts of the suspect and the missing infant.
The investigations led to the identification of a possible location in the Kabangwe area of Lusaka.
Acting on the intelligence gathered, a team of police officers proceeded to the identified area, where they located two suspects, identified as Clara Mumba, aged 23, of 20 Miles area, and Gift Chileshe, aged 30, of 6 Miles area, both of Lusaka.
Preliminary information indicates that when police officers approached the suspects' residence to effect an arrest, the suspects allegedly resisted. Clara Mumba, who was reportedly armed with a kitchen knife, allegedly threw the knife at the officers, while Gift Chileshe attempted to flee.
Police officers discharged warning shots, but the suspects reportedly remained uncooperative. Officers subsequently fired two rounds, striking the suspects in their legs and causing injuries.
The two suspects were taken to the University Teaching Hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment and are reported to be in a stable condition.
The child has since been reunited with her mother and taken to the University Teaching Hospital for medical attention.
The Zambia Police Service wishes to assure the public that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
