World Cup to feature mid-half hydration breaks The 2026 World Cup will feature hydration breaks in each half, effectively dividing matches into four quarters, FIFA announced. Referees will pause games 22 minutes into each half for three-minute water breaks, allowing players to rehydrate. Unlike last year’s Club World Cup in the United States, where breaks were limited to extreme heat, these hydration pauses will be mandatory for every match, regardless of venue or weather. The three minutes will be added to stoppage time, but the game clock will continue to run. The tournament, set to run from June 11 to July 14 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will be the first 48-team World Cup. FIFA also plans to hold three opening ceremonies before each host nation plays its first match. The tournament kicks off June 11 in Mexico City with Mexico facing South Africa.
