INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CAVES AND KARST: PROTECTING NATURE’S HIDDEN TREASURES By Lilian Ezejiegu The world will on Sunday, September 13, 2026, mark the inaugural International Day of Caves and Karst, following its proclamation by UNESCO in November 2025. The International Union of Speleology confirms that 2026 is the first-ever observance. The observance was proclaimed at the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand on November 12, 2025, following an initiative developed by the International Union of Speleology, with support from the Republic of Slovenia. It seeks to raise global awareness of caves and karst landscapes and promote their protection, research, education, cultural significance and responsible use for sustainable development.
