SENATE ADJOURNS EMERGENCY PLENARY ON STATE POLICE OVER REP’S DEATH. The Senate today suspended consideration of the highly anticipated State Police Bill and all other legislative business at its emergency plenary session to honour the memory of Hon. Yaya Tongo, a member of the House of Representatives, whose death cast a sombre mood over the National Assembly. The upper chamber had reconvened from recess amid expectations that lawmakers would accelerate action on the proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish state police across the federation, a measure widely seen as a major step in the ongoing effort to reform Nigeria’s security architecture. However, proceedings were cut short after Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the death of Tongo, who represented the Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State in the House of Representatives. According to sources,an attempt by North Korea to establish a diplomatic mission in Nairobi has been turned down.Diplomatic source within the United Nation office in Nairobi have indicated that the UN mounted pressure on Nairobi to reject the move by North Koreans,despite officials from that countr visiting Nairobi twice.Though on sunday,the government denied that North Korea,formally known as the Democratic people's Republic of Korea {DPRK},has made the application.Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho told their Kenya citizens that ''That is not true.North Korea did not make such request''.However the UN says two delegations came to Nairobi in November last year and in early March,seeking favours and hopefully start a process of establishing a diplomatic post in Nairobi.''The delegations had had very powerful officials in the government of North Korea.They sought to speak with foreign ministry officials over the possibility of establishing an embassy.The UN suggested against it and there was further pressure from other countries who voiced similar concerns''.
