 1980 AFCON Champion Charles Bassey Dies at 71 Charles Bassey, a member of Nigeria’s historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, has died at the age of 71 after a prolonged illness. He passed away on Saturday in his hometown, Eket, Akwa Ibom State. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed his death in a statement released on Monday by its General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, describing the loss as part of a “day of double tragedy” following the earlier death of team captain Christian Chukwu. Bassey was part of the Green Eagles team that secured Nigeria’s first AFCON title with a 3-0 victory over Algeria at the National Stadium in Lagos on March 22, 1980. After retiring as a player, he transitioned into coaching and managed several clubs, including Calabar Rovers, Mobil Pegasus, BCC Lions, Flash Flamingoes, Akwa United, and Wikki Tourists. His passing brings the number of deceased members of the 1980 squad to nine.

STEPHEN KESHI,DENIED EVER SENDING HIS C.V TO THE IVORIAN FOOTBALL FEDERATION.

            Stephen Keshi who was reportedly listed as an applicant by the Ivorian Football Federation {FIF} along side 58 other coaches denied he ever applied for the job.Emmanuel Ado,Keshi's agent said ''If Keshi is to leave,his contract is explicit on how he can go about it,but he is happy with his job and he is willing to see out his two year contract.We don't know why people are creating crisis where there is none.If Keshi was to apply for the Ivory Coast job,i would be the one to handle it and he never sent Keshi's C.V to the Ivorian Football Federation.I am his official agent and i am the one that would have done that on his behalf if he was interested.I was the one that negotiated Keshi's contract in Togo,Mali,when he was discussing with Equatorial Guinea and here in Nigeria,we know what is his current contract and we are professionals and would not go against a signed agreement''.
