NEMA COORDINATES SAR OPS AT THE SCENE OF BUILDING COLLAPSE INVOLVING A THREE STOREY BUILDING UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT GUDU AREA OF FCT At about 0945hrs on Saturday 16th May, 2026, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) was alerted of a building collapse at Gudu District of FCT. Critical stakeholders including Federal Fire, FCT Fire, NSCDC, NPF, FRSC and Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) were activated while a response team of NEMA from the Abuja Operations Office led by the Head of Operations Mr Zakari Abubakar and operatives from AYA Emergency Response Bay (ERAB) were deployed to the scene for quick response and coordination. A reinforcement team from NEMA Headquarters led by the Director Search and Response (DSAR) Air Cdre Bature Usman was also on ground to provide necessary backup and supervision. It was reported today that a boat packed with mainly African migrants bound for Italy sank off the Libyan coast yesterday thursday and officials said up to 200 people might have died.A security official in the western town of Zuwara,from where the over crowded boat had set off,said there had been around 400 people on board.Many appeared to have been trapped in the hold when it capsized.By late in the evening,the Libyan coast guard rescued around 201 of which 147 were brought to a detention facility for illegal migrants in Sabratha,west of Tripoli.The migrants on board had been from sub-Saharan Africa,Pakistan,Syria,Morocco and Bangladesh.One more photo below.
