 1980 AFCON Champion Charles Bassey Dies at 71 Charles Bassey, a member of Nigeria’s historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, has died at the age of 71 after a prolonged illness. He passed away on Saturday in his hometown, Eket, Akwa Ibom State. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed his death in a statement released on Monday by its General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, describing the loss as part of a “day of double tragedy” following the earlier death of team captain Christian Chukwu. Bassey was part of the Green Eagles team that secured Nigeria’s first AFCON title with a 3-0 victory over Algeria at the National Stadium in Lagos on March 22, 1980. After retiring as a player, he transitioned into coaching and managed several clubs, including Calabar Rovers, Mobil Pegasus, BCC Lions, Flash Flamingoes, Akwa United, and Wikki Tourists. His passing brings the number of deceased members of the 1980 squad to nine.

OAU STUDENTS,PERFORMS THE ''ORO'' RITUALS FOR THE LATE OONI OF ILE-IFE,YESTERDAY.

            I have been hearing of Oro all my life,but i really don't know what it really is,so yesterday wednesday the 12th of August 2015 some students of Obafemi Awolowo University {OAU},Ile Ife,gave us an insight on what the rituals is all about.The student mimicked the Oro festival just about the same time the traditionalists of Ile-Ife were also performing their rites on the passing of Oba Okunade Sijuwade.The management of the university had ordered the students to remain indoors yesterday wednesday in compliance with the directive of the council of chiefs of the Late Ooni of Ife,Oba Okunlade Sijuade.The Awara of Iwara Ife,Oba Layi Adereti on monday,10th of August,2015 said the Oro festival is the final rite of passage for the late monarch stating that wednesday between the hours of 9am and 4pm have been fixe for the final pronouncement of the demise of Ooni.Oba Adereti who is also the head of Oro cult in the entire Ile-Ife said that all residents of the ancient town whether male or female would remain indoor during the Oro rite.More photos below.
