At least seven dead after ferry carrying nearly 270 people capsizes off northern Cyprus coast At least seven people have died after a ferry carrying nearly 270 passengers and crew capsized off the northern coast of Cyprus on Sunday. Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Unal Ustel said 237 people had been rescued, while search teams continued looking for 24 others. The ferry encountered difficult weather conditions and began taking on water about 15 minutes after leaving port, prompting a distress call shortly afterward. The catamaran-style vessel was traveling from Kyrenia, also known as Girne, in northern Cyprus to the Turkish port of Tasucu in Mersin province. Kyrenia Mayor Murat Senkul said the ferry was operated by Filo Denizcilik and sank off Diana beach along Cyprus’ northern coast.
