 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. A MOTORCYCLIST ''MOHAMMED'' WAS SENTENCED TO 6 MONTHS FOR STEALING A CELL PHONE IN LAGOS.

                    According to sources,one 18 years old commercial motorcyclist,Mohammed Hassan has been sentenced to six months in prison for stealing a mobile phone valued at N1,500 and escaping from police custody.During his arraignment on January 6 by the police at a Lagos State Magistrate's Court in  Igbosere,Hassan pleaded guilty to committing both offences contrary to Sections 285 and 106 of the Criminal Law of Law State,2011.Prosecuting police officer,Ester Adesulu,had told th court that on January 2 at about 5:10pm,Hassan stole one Slok Phone valued at N1,500 property of one Halima Sanni,at shop 6,POWA Market,Obalende Police Barracks,Lagos.She said that two days later at about 5:30pm at Onikan Police Station,South West Ikoyi,Hassan escaped from the custody of Inspector Theresa Obasi.Hassan who hails from Jimata local government area of Adamastate,came to Lagos in October 2015 and works as commercial motor cyclist.He went to the complainant's shop to buy jean trousers but met no one there.He saw the phone,took it but was caught by the shop owner,who returned as he was leaving the place.
