 “No electricity, no vote,” South Africans threaten to shun ruling party ANC Residents in Katlehong, a township outside Johannesburg, have resolved to boycott South Africa's upcoming local elections on November 4 due to long-standing failures by authorities to provide basic services like electricity. For over 20 years, around 180 households in the community have relied on illegal electrical connections pulled from neighboring areas to power their homes. Angry over the lack of formal grid infrastructure, residents are directing their frustration at the ruling African National Congress (ANC). "We have made a collective decision: no electricity, no vote," said community leader Lesiba Rankapole, 59. "We know it is illegal, but we had no choice because we cannot live without electricity.                    In continuation of the efforts of getting rid of the menace of cattle rustling,armed banditry and other criminality in the country generally and in the north west geo-political region,under the auspices of Operation SHARAN DAJI,troops of 1 Brigade Nigeria Police in Zamfara State,have carried out a joint clearance operation in Maru today.Although most of the targeted suspected cattle rustlers and armed bandits have escaped,the joint team recovered substantial quantity of arms and ammunitions in the area.It is equally believed some of the criminals escaped with gun shot wounds.The team is still combing the general area for such persons.Consequently,the public in Zamfara,Sokoto,Katsina and Kaduna states in particular,are please requested to report any suspicious persons especially those with gun shot wounds.-Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman,Acting Diector Army Public Relations.More photos below
