 Convicted war criminal Lubanga announces new rebel group in east Congo A convicted war criminal based in Uganda has announced a new rebel movement intent on toppling the government in eastern Congo's Ituri province, creating another potential security threat in the war-scarred region, Reuters reported. The formation of the Convention for the Popular Revolution (CPR) by Thomas Lubanga, an Ituri native, comes as Congo's army faces an unprecedented advance by Rwandan-backed M23 rebels elsewhere in eastern Congo. The International Criminal Court secured its first conviction against Lubanga in 2012 on charges of recruiting child soldiers and sentenced him to 14 years in prison. He was released in 2020 and President Felix Tshisekedi appointed him to a task force to bring peace to Ituri. But in 2022 he was taken hostage for two months by a rebel group, which he blames on the government, and is now based in Uganda.     Senate President Bukola Saraki took to social media to share this information two hours ago.He wrote ''Following my conversation with Senator George Akume, a former Governor of Benue State, over the recent gruesome killings in the state, today, we resolved to invite the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to brief the Senate in the Committee of the whole over the recent killings.
Additionally, we have resolved that during this briefing, the Inspector General of Police should brief us on the treatment of Senator Dino Melaye that we have observed over the past 48hours.At this time, it is important that all excesses must be curtailed in the interest of our democracy. We must always put law and order and the protection of the rights and properties of the Nigerian people first. Hence, those who are in charge of enforcing our laws must always keep this in mind''.

 Actor Baba Ijesha appeals five-year jail sentence for sexual assault Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James, known as Baba Ijesha, has filed an appeal against his conviction for the sexual assault of a minor. He has requested the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, to overturn the ruling of the Lagos State High Court, which sentenced him to five years in prison. The conviction was handed down by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo (retd.) of the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on July 14, 2022 to Baba Ijesha. Baba Ijesha through his counsel Kayode Olabiran on Tuesday, told the appeal court that his client was set up and that he acted according to a script that he was invited to act on by his colleague. “The Appellant was set up.
