 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. LASG OPENS UPGRADED ALFRED REWANE GARDEN FOR PUBLIC USE.

     The Lagos State Government has opened the upgraded Alfred Rewane Beautified Garden, Ikoyi for use by members of the public within and around the Ikoyi axis.
Speaking at the formal unveiling of the site on Thursday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe described the event as a manifestation of an idea conceived to further consolidate the Smart City Agenda of the State Government.
He noted that the beautification project was a vivid testimony to the State Government’s concern for the environment in line with its determination to show unwavering commitment to solve major environmental challenges in the State.
Hunpe said that apart from meeting the sustainable environment criterion of the Millenium Developmental Goals, the relaxation spot will also help enhance the psychological well-being of the residents.
Also speaking at the event, the General Manager of Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, LASPARK, Mrs. Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola, disclosed that the upgrade and beautification of the garden were significant because Ikoyi, being one of the highbrow areas of the State, was gradually losing its serenity.
She averred that the project which was developed in line with international standards and best practices will restore the serenity for which Ikoyi and its environs are known for and it will also enhance other beautiful sites around the area.
Giving background information of the expansive garden that sits on 9,174 square meters from Osborne junction through Lugard Avenue to NNPC, Adebiyi-Abiola explained that the site has among other state-of-the-art facilities, garden seats, garden lights, rail guard and ornamental plants amongst others.
She restated that the present administration’s commitment to continually initiate and implement environmental policies and programmes that would enrich the aesthetic nature of the environment.
In her words “Let me state unequivocally that the major objective of various environmental protection laws including the campaign on tree planting, is to achieve a serene, beautiful and healthy State that will guarantee the general wellbeing of the citizenry.”.She added that the current trend in the beautification and landscaping of road setbacks, degraded areas, gardens and open spaces by the Government shows awareness on the part of this administration that a beautiful environment is a peaceful and serene sight to behold.
