The Acting Director Lagos Fire Service, Mr. Rasaki Musibau on Wednesday warned motorists to avoid abandoning their vehicles on roads, especially at night in order to avert accidents and loss of lives.
He made this assertion during his visit to the site of multiple accidents which claimed two lives, left five people injured and involved five vehicles along Lagos Badagry Expressway opposite Ojo Military Cantonment in Lagos.
According to him, "it is disheartening to note that motorists are not cautious of the dangers inherent in abandoning their vehicles on the road overnight with excuses of malfunction or fault, saying that the accident was primarily caused by three vehicles which included one IVECO Tipper Truck loaded with sand, one Mack Trailer with Sumec and Elemax generating sets and one other unknown car which were stationed on the expressway overnight; the vehicles were rammed into unknowingly in the early hours of Wednesday by other oncoming vehicles".
“A Mack tanker laden with 33,000 liters PMS and a Datsun car stocked with cartons of frozen fish with three passengers rammed into the three abandoned stationery vehicles and resulted in the spilling of the petroleum contents on the road, thereby igniting Fire which severely burnt the tanker carrying PMS, Trailer with Generating sets and the unknown car while the remaining two were slightly affected”, he explained.
Two out of the three occupants (a male and female) of the Datsun car were killed in the fire while five other people were rescued and taken to the nearest hospitals for urgent medical attention.
The Director thereby appealed to motorists to ensure the safety of other road users by ensuring proper maintenance of their vehicles so as to avoid an indiscriminate breakdown on the roads as well as prevent a future mishap.
