 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. TWO BAG 6-YEARS EACH FOR STEALING IN GOMBE.{PHOTO}.

     The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Gombe Zonal Office ON Monday, March 4, 2019 secured the conviction of Yusuf Usman and Sani Ahmed before Justice Abubakar Jauro of the Gombe State High Court on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing.
They were arraigned on February 27, 2019 and pleaded "guilty" to the charges.
The trial judge, thereafter, fixed March 4, 2019 for conviction and sentencing.
Count two of the charge reads: "That you, Yusuf Usman and Sani Ahmed at Gombe, in the Gombe Judicial Division of the High Court of Gombe State, with intent did dishonestly commit theft to with fraudulently convert the sum of $44,700 (Forty Four Thousand Seven Hundred Dollars) from one Abdullahi Nabunkari by falsely claiming the said sum was meant for the facilitation of a construction contract award by the Gombe State Government to your own use and thereby committed an offence contrary to and Punishable under Section 286 and 287 of the Penal Code Law, Laws of Northern Nigeria."
Justice Jauro convicted them and sentenced them to three years in prison on each count to run consecutively.
The court further ordered on application of prosecution counsel I. O. Akande that restitution be made to the nominal complainant within six months of the judgement to be effected by the EFCC for the whole amount.
