 Fubara, lawmakers feud throws Rivers into turmoil • Three pro-governor legislators elect Speaker • Council chiefs, govt disagree over withheld allocation The crisis in Rivers State took a turn for the worse yesterday. Three members of the House of Assembly loyal to Governor Siminialayi Fubara declared themselves as the authentic House of Assembly members. They elected one of them, Victor Oko-Jumbo, representing Bonny Constituency, as Speaker. This follows the governor’s declaration of 27 lawmakers who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as illegitimate. The election of Oko-Jumbo as speaker took place at about 10 am. ALLEGED N100M BRIBE: TRIAL OF CHINESE BEGINS JUNE 29.{PHOTO}.

    The trial of two Chinese: Meng Wei Kun and Xui Kuoi of China Zhongao Nigeria Ltd., slated to begin , Monday, June 15, 2020 before Justice Muhammad Sa'idu Sifawa of the Sokoto State High Court, could not go on as planned, following the withdrawal of defence counsel, Ahmed Raji & Co from representing the defendants. Based on this, commencement of their trial is now slated for June 29, 2020.

The defendants are facing prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes, EFCC, for allegedly offering to bribe the Sokoto Zonal Head of the Commission, Mr. Abdullahi Lawal to the tune of N100,000 (One Hundred Million), out of which a part payment of N50,000.000.00 (Fifty Million Naira) in cash was offered on May 12, 2020. The suspects were promptly arrested by officers of the Commission.

 Actor Baba Ijesha appeals five-year jail sentence for sexual assault Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James, known as Baba Ijesha, has filed an appeal against his conviction for the sexual assault of a minor. He has requested the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, to overturn the ruling of the Lagos State High Court, which sentenced him to five years in prison. The conviction was handed down by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo (retd.) of the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on July 14, 2022 to Baba Ijesha. Baba Ijesha through his counsel Kayode Olabiran on Tuesday, told the appeal court that his client was set up and that he acted according to a script that he was invited to act on by his colleague. “The Appellant was set up. Namtira Bwala has threatened to file a lawsuit against the school authorities if her abusers are not punished within 48 hours. In a letter drafted by her lawyers, Deji Adeyanju and Co, Namtira asked the school authorities to immediately investigate and pronounce the stiffest punishments in the student’s rule book on Ms.Maryam Hassan, Miss Faliya, and nine other students who bullied her.
