 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. ONDO GUBER ELECTION: IGP CAUTIONS POLITICIANS AGAINST VIOLENCE
• Charges Police and other Law Enforcement Agents to be above Board
With three days to the Ondo Gubernatorial Election, slated to hold on Saturday, 10th October 2020, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP M.A. Adamu, NPM, mni has for the umpteenth time, warned politicians against actions and utterances that could be inimical to a free, fair and credible election. Specifically, the IGP warns that the full weight of the law will be meted out to anyone, no matter their status in society, who engages in any electoral fraud such as political violence, vote buying, ballot box snatching, hate speeches and all other unwholesome practices capable of undermining the peace and stability of the electoral process.
Similarly, the IGP has charged all Police Officers and other law enforcement agents deployed for the election to act in accordance with the Electoral Act and other extant laws guiding their overall conduct before, during and after the elections. He warns that Police Officers and officers of other law enforcement agencies found acting contrary to their oaths of office or in aid of illicit electoral practices will be strictly and personally held liable with dire legal consequences.

Meanwhile, the IGP has reassured the people of Ondo State that adequate security measures have been emplaced to ensure their safety throughout the period of the gubernatorial election and beyond. He reiterates that there have been adequate deployments in terms of manpower, marine and aerial surveillance and other assets of the force to ensure effective security coverage. He therefore enjoins all eligible voters to come out en mass to freely and peacefully exercise their franchise in line with their civic obligation, without any fear of intimidation on the day of the election.
