 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. *Vows to enforce to the latter government directives against the harassment and extortion on innocent citizens on the road in the name of IGR collection*
In continuation with it's comittment towards enforcing government directives against the harassement and extortion on innocent citizens on the road in the name of IGR collection,joint police patrol teams in conjunction with other Sister Agencies led by the Area Commander Onitsha, ACP John Ogbuagbaka had between 9/12/2020 and date while on patrol along Head bridge,upper iweka, Owerri road,Niger street and Borromeo roundabout all in Onitsha arrested twenty(20) llegal revenue collectors under false pretense of being government revenue agents in the State.
All the Suspects voluntarily confessed to the offence and claimed they were hired by various persons to either collect or enforce the collections of revenue on behalf of government.
This operation was in compliance by Anambra State Government directives on the 7th December,2020 "banning all forms of illegal revenue collections by persons claiming to be State revenue agents or officials.Suspects would be brought to book as soon as investigations are concluded.
Consequently,the Command warns that anybody found engaging in such acts should be ready to face the full wrath of the law.The Command will continue to pursue the hoodlums until they refrain from criminal activities or relocate from the State.
