 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. Governor Willie Obiano has called on stakeholders in the state to make calls for stoppage of all forms of aggression against the police and other security agencies in the state.
Governor Obiano made the call during a statewide broadcast on the successful rescue and release of the abducted Commissioner for Public Utilities, Engineer Emeka Ezenwanne.
Recall that the release by the Anambra State Police Command confirmed the safety of the Commissioner for Public Utilities, Engr Emeka Ezenwanne who was released today, 4th April 2021.
He was abducted following the attack at Isuofia Civic Center that led to the murder of three (3) Police Officers by some hoodlums, while five suspects in connection with the incident were arrested.
According to the Governor, immediately after the unfortunate incident, the state security architecture swung into action, stressing that no ransome was demanded or given before his release.
While commiserating with the families of the slain officers, the Governor condemned the attack, pointing out that the aftermath of the ENDSARS protest is still very fresh in the mind and will not be allowed to repeat itself.
Governor Obiano who assured that the state is on steady rise to greatness, appreciated the security operatives, urging them to continue discharging their duty professionally.
The Governor concluded by wishing ndi Anambra a happy Easter, calling for a reflection of the message of the season on the lives of ndi Anambra.
