 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. In line with the commitment by the wife of the Governor of Anambra state, Dr Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano to  stop open defecation in the state, and to uplift the living standards of Ndi Anambra, a new toilet facility has been built and commissioned at Unizik temporary site junction Awka.


The facility which is dedicated to the Governor’s wife has sections for male, female, physically-challenged persons, and for nursing mothers. 


The facility has round-the-clock security, borehole and overhead tank for adequate water supply that will guarantee hygiene at the facility.


Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, ACTDA, Barrister Amaechi Okwuosa, who announced that the dedication of the facility to the Anambra first lady was to immortalise and help her achieve lofty objectives for Ndi-Anambra, recalled that Mrs Obiano had embarked on similar projects in Local Government Areas across the State, adding that the facility at the UNIZIK junction will be built in other strategic places within the State capital.


He urged the public to treat the facility with utmost care, and accord deserved respect to security and other staff working at the facility, and warned against misuse of the facility.


Commending the state government for the project through the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, Mr. Chukwubiko Ezeonwujiobi, a commercial driver with the Ekwulobia Urban Mass Transit, and Mrs Stella Ike, called on the general public to reciprocate Government gestures by taking ownership of the facility.
