 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. OVER 200 PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES DEPLOYED IN VARIOUS POLLING UNITS AHEAD OF THE NOVEMBER 6TH ANAMBRA GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION.{PHOTOS}.

USAID, Access Nigeria, Inclusive Friends and National Democratic Institute NDI, says over 200 trained Persons With Disabilities have been deployed to all polling units to ensure inclusiveness.


The groups made this known during  a pre-election press conference in Awka titled polling Unit Accessibility Audit on November 6 Election. 


 Briefing Journalists on the importance of Persons with Disabilities in the electoral process,  the Executive Director of Inclusive Friends Association,IFA ,Jerry Grace said that the organisations team up together to campaign for increase the participation of PWDs in Nigeria’s political and electoral processes by reducing the physical, attitudinal and institutional barriers that makes it difficult or impossible for them to participate.

 


She noted that the agencies promotes social and human rights approaches to disability and made it clear that persons with disabilities do not want pity but to enjoy the full participation in Nigeria's electoral and political processes.


On his part ,The Deputy Country Director ,National Democratic Institute ( NDI ) Mr Francis Madugu charged  Independent  National Electroal Commission INEC,   to ensure effective election also guarantee the provision of Persons Living with Disabilities friendly election materials including the election day written instructions. 


He ended up by appreciating Governor Willie Obiano Disability friendly polices and programmed, expressed hope that the incoming Administration will do more better for Persons with Disabilities in the state.


Responding ,Representatives Joint Association of  Persons Living with Disabilities, JONAPWD ,Anambra State, Lady Chidimma Ajemba said there’s need for special attention to Persons with Disabilities to vote, security wise across the community. 


She also noted that the aim of the Agency is to increase the participation of Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria political and electoral processes by reducing the physical, attitudinal and institutional barriers that make it difficult or impossible for them to participate.
