 Senate Approves Death Penalty For Drug Traffickers The Senate has approved the death penalty for those convicted on the charge of drug trafficking in the country. The punishment prescribed in the extant NDLEA Act is a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The resolution of the Senate followed its consideration of a report of the Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters and Drugs and Narcotics, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The Chairman of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights & Legal Matters presented the report during plenary, Sen.Mohammed Monguno (APC-Borno North). The bill, which passed its third reading, aims to update the list of dangerous drugs, strengthen the operations of the NDLEA, review penalties, and empower the establishment of laboratories. National Population Commission Flags Off Second Pre-Test For Next Population Census In Awka.

The Federal Commissioner representing Anambra State in National Population Commission,  Mr. Chidi Ezeoke has flagged off training of field functionaries for the next population and housing census. 


The programme is being carried out simultanously  in the thirty six states of the federation bad Federal Capital Territory Abuja.


Mr Ezeoke said that pre- tests are usually conducted before the actual census aimed at testing the census methodology, questionnaires, data collection method, manual for fieldwork among other things, noting that the objectives of the second pre-test include to critically and comprehensively assess the suitability of questionnaire, clarity of concepts, instructions and contents of census instruments.


Mr. Ezeoke who commended governor Willie Obiano for his assistance called on Local Government, traditional rulers, and communities to support the Commission allowing access to facilities and places to be enumerated and as well sensitize the people on the essence of the pre- test exercise.


The Anambra State Director National Population Commission, Dr. Joachim Ulasi  stated that four local government selected for the exercise in Anambra which included Njikoka, Anambra West, Nnewi South and Ogbaru, adding that they are training field Coordinators, Supervisors and Enumerators for the second pre-test which will be followed by trial section.


The Anambra State Co-ordinator for second pre-test, Comrade Harrison Ezekwe noted that the essence of the second pre-test was to get it right and build on what was discovered during the first pre-test, assuring that they have capable hands for the exercise.
