 Magnitude 5.5 earthquake strikes eastern Egypt A magnitude 5.5 earthquake shook eastern Egypt early Monday, prompting authorities to activate response plans, although there were no immediate requests for emergency help. The tremors were felt across a wide area, waking residents across Cairo and reaching as far as El-Arish near Egypt's border with the Gaza Strip. The quake struck about 40 kilometres north of the city of Suez at 3:00 am (0000 GMT), according to Egypt's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, which revised an earlier estimate of 5.2.

A former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (Retd.), has said the country is sinking in the hands of autocrats, mediocre, ethnic champions, incompetent and visionless actors.

Babangida stated this when he received the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyorcha Ayu, at his Uphill Residence alongside the members of the National Working Committee of the party.

“If we have failed to adequately manage the complexities of the competitive party and electoral politics since independence, we now have a golden opportunity at our present crossroads to turn in the direction of pursuing politics as a public interest project, in line with moral and statutory provisions of article 13 and article 14 of the constitution of Nigeria,” he said.
